Chlorine dioxide is a chemical substance commonly used for drinking water treatment. It is used to eliminate pathogens present in water. The FDA, the WHO and other agencies worldwide permit its use as a disinfectant for treating water intended for human consumption, within the concentration limits laid down.<\/p>\n
It is important to distinguish between gas and aqueous solution: as a gas it can be dangerous because it is reactive in air; in water it is not reactive and remains dissolved up to 0.3%.<\/p>\n
It is not chlorine (Cl2), bleach, hypochlorite (NaClO), or sodium chlorite (NaClO2), nor does it contain them. It is not CD, or a mixture of 2 components; it is only pure chlorine dioxide gas dissolved in water.<\/p>\n
Chlorine dioxide is produced in different ways and the result is not the same. Unlike a mixture containing Sodium Chlorite (NaClO2) with an acid, CDS does not contain sodium chlorite and therefore produces no by-products when used dissolved in water.<\/p>\n
The main advantage of chlorine dioxide in CDS form is its neutral pH and safety. Unlike other chlorine-based products (Cl2), chlorine dioxide does not produce toxic and carcinogenic trihalomethanes (THMs) and is considered ideal for eliminating all types of pathogens.<\/p>\n
